A nebulizer is a device that is used by a patient to administer a variety of medications that are to be inhaled into the lungs by way of a mist. This is a refreshing mist that is used to aid those with various respiratory problems.
A nebulizer consists of two major components: the compressor and the nebulizer. The compressor gives power to the nebulizer and breaks down the liquid medication in order for it to be small enough to be turned into a mist. The nebulizer consists of the cup that holds the medicine, the tubing that transfers the medication, and either a mask or mouthpiece which is where you receive the medication in the form of a mist.
Nebulizers are bulkier than inhalers and require power from a plug in or batteries making them more difficult to travel with. However, the devices are becoming smaller and there are nebulizers available that are rather easy to take anywhere you may go.
A nebulizer must be either purchased from a licensed physician or purchased through a retailer with a prescription from a licensed physician.
