Because you will be using your nebulizer without supervision, it is important to understand how it works. There are a variety of nebulizer models and many will work in slightly different ways, but there are some common threads.
Generally, your medication will be poured into a small container and then inhaled through a mouthpiece on the nebulizer. If there is difficulty in using the mouthpiece, such as with those very ill, or children, a mask can be used to make the process easier. You will want to take deep, slow breaths to allow the medication to get into your lungs where it can be beneficial.
You will continue with these type of breaths for anywhere from five to thirty minutes, which can become very relaxing, especially if you set the mood right for yourself, such as with your favorite music, scented candles and/or dim lighting.
There are several things to watch out for in the use and maintenance of your nebulizer. Because the medication is efficiently put into your lungs, you have to be careful to not take too deep or fast a breath. This can cause dizziness and/or jitteriness among some. In this case, you should stop the treatment for a few minutes until you feel normal again.
You should also be aware that your nebulizer will require routine cleaning. In storage, your nebulizer can collect dust and debris that can be harmful if taken into your lungs.
